"Thorn of Béxar" is the authors' first novel. It is tautly written fiction, but rich in historical detail about several powerful men and one mixed-race woman who helped shape 19th Century America. With Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France and the American victory over the British in the War of 1812, the most formidable obstacle to a growing United States that could one day stretch from sea to shining sea was Mexico. Its dominance west of the Mississippi conflicted with America's expansionist strategy, eventually resulting in the 1836 war for Texas Independence and the Mexican-American War of 1846. Legends grew around men and events of the period. Andrew Jackson, David Crockett and Sam Houston famously left their marks on history. General Lopez de Santa Anna, charismatic, self-proclaimed Emperor of Mexico, became the villain. Jean Lafitte and his protégé, Renato Beluche - infamous pirates, fought for the US in the Battle of New Orleans. Neither the heroes nor the villains were as illustrious, or as incendiary, as their legends would have us believe. And one heroic woman, Emily Morgan West, has existed in relative obscurity until now, perhaps because, as a female of mixed-race, historians largely ignored her. Yet she almost singlehandedly changed the course of Texas history, and her striking appearance inspired one of America's enduring folk songs.

What a wonderful read full of historical accounts crafted in a clear, organized fashion. Authors Robert Wuench and Howard Carman did a lovely job building upon historical events while weaving the life of Emily West through the chapters. It was interesting to learn about so many different pieces of history from Philadelphia to Charleston to New Orleans to Bexar County all couched in the march to meet Santa Anna and the climax of West likely changing the course of history. The way the authors crafted the title to reflect The Yellow Rose of Texas and the personality of West is excellent. I specifically enjoyed learning about so many cultural contexts grounded in locale and time. What makes this book unlike others tracing events occurring around the Alamo or the Mexican/American war unique is this tracing of historical events with the strong Emily Miller/Morgan/West woven through them as the protagonist that readers will likely root for and eagerly turn pages to read more about (I did.). I can also see this book being a catalyst for more significant research into The Yellow Rose of Texas.
This book is a great read. The book flows really well and is packed with great history and plenty of action. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and some twist and turns that were not expected.I hope these authors take time to write another book I for sure will be a buyer.
I just finished reading it for the second time and it was better the second time. Looking forward to their next book.
You don't have to be a history buff to find this book riveting. In fact, if colleges taught history in novel form, as Thorn of Bexar was written, students would be clamoring to get into the classes. Mixed in with the fascinating historical facts and events is Emily West, an amazing, mixed-race woman, taking on complicated jobs and successfully making her way through what was a challenging existence at a turbulent time in our history. At 160 pages, the book is a quick and enthralling read and I wish it could have gone on for hundreds of pages more. I'll eagerly await Wuench and Carman's next book!
Robert and Howard did a great job with their first book, The Thorn of Bexar. I liked the fact that they stayed true to the known historical facts of the struggle to free Texas from Mexico (I even remembered some of them from my previous American History classes (just a few)). I loved the character, Emily West, and what her story added to the book. The book cover said the book was about war, personal conflict, individual dignity and the character of the people who helped shape our great country and it was all of that. Overall, the book was very good, an excellent history review, and well worth the time to read.
